The Barony traces back its origin to the Tributionary Body, as the powerful, hereditary owners of land within the Southern Eridinea. After the Tributionary's downfall, the Barony quickly coalesced around its new Monarchs as the 'Combine General Assembly'; the Parliament of the King.

Despite being the beneficiaries of the Tributionaries luxurious lifestyle and later the policy makers of kings, the Barony learnt to rely heavily upon the approval of its populace, a lesson learnt in the violent overthrowing of the Tributionaries, and later again when King Hierern II's armies fell apart and he was executed by Herald Eeder to much fanfare at the end of the Maysurian Crisis in 2364 3G.c.

Rule was transitioned to the Combine with the 'Maginate Concordat'; dissolving the monarchy and forcing the Barony to pay reparations to Maysuria in exchange for their continued independence as a city-state.

Even with his death, the shadow of King Hierern II deep suspicion and paranoia followed the Barony into their own rule; the twitch of an eye; a smile at the wrong time; a slight change in cadence when saying ‘hello’. All these things contribute to a court that ferments in delusion and paranoia. The citizens of Voltaine call this comical wheeling and dealing ‘The Infinite Gala’; a dance that will never end.

The Barony has since become an ever-changing crock pot of alliances, rivalry and betrayals; the Assembly marinates in secrets and rumours to discredit opponents and increase the standing of their own house and position within the Combine.

Voltaine has become a thriving merchant city despite the chaos of the Gala, as the Barony are reliant on the citizenry for their approval. The Barons know the most damaging rumours (or truths) flow from the taverns below the spires, where information can’t be controlled as easily above.

Some, like Herald Rohktar Deios the IV, Head Chair of the Assembly, are so ruthlessly efficient in their governance of Voltaine as to be beyond the Gala itself. It is often the dream of these Barons to join Rohktar and these others as an ‘Untouchables’; one which the rumour-mongering cannot reach, forever enshrining the legacy of their family name.
