HERALDS CAMPAIGN
Monarchy of Southern Eridinea
The Monarchy of South Eridinea was the ruling power of the city of Voltaine and surrounding regions. It ended when Eeder Othon ascended and executed King Hierern II, passing rule over to what would become the Baron-Combine of Voltaine.
In the aftermath of the Tributionary Body, a powerful politician named Hierern Voltaine wrestled control of Eridinea City from the Body remnant, and in a bloody coup established himself as the first king of Southern Eridinea, occupying the city now known as Voltaine.
Despite the violence of their uprising and the unpopularity of monarchies in Enaeth over the centuries, Hierern I, Lercaine I and II were all popular kings in their time. They enacted radical reforms in Voltaine; establishing the first charter of human rights since the Declension; repurposing the fishing routes used exclusively for the Tributionaries, making fish a staple of Eridinea diet; and creating the first modern nature preserve with the Lercaine Gardens.
During his latter years, Lercaine II saw within his heir, Hierern II, an evil countenance. Unwilling to end the monarchy for fears it would destroy his city in the process, Lercaine II began giving greater and greater powers to his Barons.
The Barony, which had existed in some form since the Tributionary Body, were the rich landowners and political friends of the monarchy. As Hierern enacted more and more political reforms, this group became his advisors, and then governors for areas within the Eridinea.
When Lercaine II died, and Hierern II became king, the Barony reformed as his parliament called 'The Combine'. The king was at a constant political battle with the Combine, as he attempted to regain control of what his father had denied him. Assassinations, betrayals and political dogpiling slowly became commonplace in Hierern II's parliament, as he used the thoroughly intimidated Barony to enact increasingly heinous policy.
Two of these policies led to Hierern's downfall; the 'Response to endemic theological refutation' and the 'Pacification and reunification of North Eridinea'; the latter of which would lead to the Maysurian Conflict.

The former was the imprisonment or exile of those suspected of atheist actions and thoughts. Radical cadets or 'Voluntary Pragmatics' would go door to door and beat, arrest and even kill those they suspected of anti-theist behaviour. In reality, this was an anti-intellectual purge.
This led to an event called "The Widowing"; with a severe lack of qualified doctors, many mothers and babies died during childbirth or from postpartum illnesses. These tragedies were felt, from the general population all the way to the Barony. Deep-seated resentment replaced fear in some of the Baron's hearts, and a faction led by Barons Rohktar ne' Deio IV and Emerito ne' Benethiehn II, who lost both of their wives in childbirth, began plotting the downfall of the king.
During these events, King Hierern II began sending expeditionary troops north to Maysuria, razing townships on refusal of tithe payment to the King. Intentionally instigating open conflict, Hierern used this as an excuse to send the Voltaine army to violently occupy Maysuria. He commanded the city sacked, and its ruler, the Ordinant Magnate, was killed. Complete control of the south was not enough for Hierern, as he turned his gaze further northward.
This was to be his undoing; Maysurian levees recruited by a common preacher named Eeder found an alliance in Torrens, and together with the Torrens Intra-Terrestrial Corp, dealt blow after blow to Hierern's armies, pushing them further south.
Things were worse for the King in Voltaine; his Baron's had brought his Combine to a standstill, each faction intentionally slowing military response, or giving misinformation to battalions in the field. The populace were on the precipace of revolt, experiencing conditions worse than under the Tributionary Body.
When the Maysurian and Torrens army pushed all the way to Voltaine, Barons Deios and Benethiehn secretly met with army leadership, and made an agreement to end the monarchy on Hierern's death. They suggested a course of action Eeder could take, challenging the King to a duel and questioning his vanity and right to rule.
This led to one of the more famous events in modern history; Eeder challenged the King, and as predicted, he accepted. They dueled in a hastily drawn circle on the ground, where Hierern knicked an artery in Eeder's leg. As Eeder began to die, the dire circumstances that the mad king had caused gave him a moment of apotheosis, and he ascended.
After King Voltaine’s execution, rule over Voltaine City was handed over to the former king’s court of Barons.
